I’ve been going through a bit of a DIY stage, or as I like to call it – GIY (Geek it yourself). Upcycling has become my ‘thing’, but I’ve also been toying with the idea of making my own natural beauty products for a while now – think Lush, but a lot shitter because I’ve been doing it five minutes.
The first thing on my list to attempt was a body scrub, because they are damned expensive yo. I knew that I wanted to add lemon into the mix, because it’s supposedly good at fixing all sorts of ailments, but the rest was a bit up in the air.
So as I stood in my kitchen with bowls of sugar and oil, and various nice smelling ingredients, I started to reminisce about all the times I helped my nan bake cakes when I was little. That in turn made me start thinking about how much I wanted to eat cake itself – lemon cakes specifically. And then it just became a one person conversation about how awesome Sansa is in the latest season of Game of Thrones.
Thus Game of Thrones body scrub was born. It’s inspired by the lemon cakes Sansa loves so much in the series, and as much as it does smell like the delicacies, I wouldn’t recommend eating it – though by all means give it a try.
It’s really simple to make, and it genuinely made my skin feel so unbelievably soft afterwards, to the point where I honestly wondered what kind of sorcery I’d managed to cook up, and would my letter to Hogwarts be coming very soon.
Ingredients
- 1 Container (mine was from Amazon
)
- Half a containers worth of sugar (so professional, I know)
- 5 tbsp Coconut Oil
- 1 tsp Honey
- 1 Lemon – squeezed
- 0 pips
The first thing you need to do is pour the sugar into your container. I didn’t bother measuring – I just filled it half way. It probably equated to about 200g approximately. You then need to melt the coconut oil. I put it in the microwave for about 30 seconds, and that seemed to do the trick.
Next, add the oil, lemon juice and honey to the sugar and give it a stir. At this point, the mixture is probably going to be on the damp side, so you’re going to need to add more sugar. How much is up to you – do you want the scrub super coarse, or a little softer? I like to be able to scrape off a good three layers of skin, so I added about 5 more tbsp.
Then you just let it set. I gave it a bit of a mix about an hour later, because the coconut oil does go quite hard, but yeah – voila! Like I said, it made my skin feel AMAZING. And it lasted just over a week, scrubbing every other day. If you were using it slightly more sparingly, you’d probably get a months worth of use out of it.
I hope you guys have lots of fun trying this out – and using it. Have you ever made your own bath products before? Would you give this a go? It’s really easy, I promise.
