With only 10 days to go until one of my most anticipated movies of 2019 hits cinema screens – Captain Marvel – I thought it was the perfect time to have a little look at what other films will be arriving this year, and boy is there a lot to look forward to.
From the eagerly anticipated Avengers climax, to sequels and remakes you never knew you needed, there has never been a greater time to be a film geek. So without further ado, here are 18 Sci-fi and Fantasy movies you can look forward to seeing throughout 2019.
Oh, and if you’re more of a scary movie person, I have another list especially for you – here are my nine most anticipated Horror flicks.
Captain Marvel

Release Date | 8th March
Captain Marvel follows Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes after Earth gets caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races. Set in the 1990s, this all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is going to open the doors for Avengers: Endgame – which I am absolutely stoked about. If you’re after something to keep you ticking over until Endgame is released, then this is the movie for you.
Starring | Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, Jude Law, Ben Mendelsohn, Djimon Hounsou, Lee Pace, Clark Gregg

Shazam!

Release Date | 5th April
From Marvel to DC, Shazam is about Billy Batson – a streetwise 14-year-old foster kid – who can turn into the adult Superhero Shazam, courtesy of an ancient wizard. Still a kid at heart, he revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! And so he sets out to test the limits of his abilities, but he’ll need to master his powers quickly in order to fight the deadly forces of evil. This is going to be the most prefect role for Zachary Levi, and I can’t wait to see what he does with the character.
Starring | Zachary Levi, Asher Angel, Mark Strong, Djimon Hounsou, Jack Dylan Grazer, Ron Cephas Jones

Hellboy

Release Date | 12th April
Based on the Dark Horse graphic novels by Mike Mignola, this remake of Guillermo del Toro’s Hellboy movie may not have been high on my list of priorities when it comes to Comic Book based films, but the R-rating has certainly caught my interest – along with the involvement of Stranger Things’ David Harbour, who will be playing the red devil. Unfortunately, not a lot is currently known about the films synopsis, just that Hellboy will be caught between the supernatural and human worlds, battling an ancient sorceress bent on revenge.
Starring | David Harbour, Milla Jovovich, Ian McShane, Daniel Dae Kim, Brian Gleeson

Avengers: Endgame

Release Date | 26th April
Avengers: Endgame is probably the movie I’m most excited to watch in 2019, and I’m sure a lot of you will be in the same boat. They’ve kept the film incredibly secret so far, so all we know is that it’s set after the events of Avengers: Infinity War, with the universe in ruins and missing half of its population. Presumably, the remaining Avengers – Thor, Iron Man, Captain America, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Hulk, and War Machine (along with a few others) will assemble once more in order to undo Thanos’ actions and restore the universe. Make sure you’re all caught up with all the MCU by completing my Marvel Movie Marathon.
Starring | Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr, Chris Hemsworth, Brie Larson, Scarlett Johansson

In the midst of Pokemon Go’s popularity, Detective Pikachu has come at just the right time. Finding that they are uniquely equipped to communicate with one another, Tim and Pikachu join forces on a thrilling adventure to unravel the tangled mystery, and encounter a diverse cast of Pokémon characters along the way. I can’t wait to see which Pokemon make an appearance.

John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum

Release Date | 17th May
The John Wick movies have been some of my favourite films to watch in the past couple of years, and in this third instalment, super-assassin Wick returns with a $14 million price tag on his head, along with an army of bounty-hunting killers on his trail. After killing a member of the international assassin’s guild, John Wick is incommunicado, but the world’s most ruthless hit men and women await his every turn.

Aladdin

Release Date | 24th May
Aladdin will be one of three live action Disney movies being released in 2019 – next to Dumbo and The Lion King – and follows a similar route as it’s animated counterpart: a street rat frees a genie from a lamp, gets granted three wishes and transforms himself into a charming prince in order to marry a beautiful princess, whilst an evil sorcerer becomes hell-bent on securing the lamp for his own sinister purposes. A lot of people are a bit sceptical of Will Smith’s portrayal of the Genie, but I’ve got to say – I’m a little excited to see what he comes up with.
Starring | Mena Massoud, Naomi Scott, Merwan Kenzari, Will Smith

Godzilla: King of the Monsters

Release Date | 31st May
This new story follows the heroic efforts of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch as its members face off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah. When these ancient super-species – thought to be mere myths – rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity’s very existence hanging in the balance. I still haven’t actually watched the most recent Godzilla movie, but this sequel looks stunning and you can never have too much Millie Bobby Brown in your life.
Starring | Millie Bobby Brown, Sally Hawkins, Ken Watanabe, Vera Farmiga, Charles Dance

With Jean spiralling out of control, and hurting the ones she loves most, she begins to unravel the very fabric that holds the X-Men together. Now, they must find a way to unite – not only to save Jean’s soul, but to save our very planet from aliens who wish to weaponize this force and rule the galaxy.

Men in Black International

Release Date | 14th June
After seeing the chemistry between Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson in Thor: Ragnarok, I’ve got to say, I am pretty excited for Men in Black International. The Men in Black have always protected the Earth from the scum of the universe, and in this new adventure, they tackle their biggest, most global threat to date: a mole in the Men in Black organisation. This is going to be a very nostalgic movie for me – I just hope Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones make a cameo.
Starring | Chris Hemsworth, Tessa Thompson, Liam Neeson, Emma Thompson, Rebecca Ferguson

Toy Story 4

Release Date | 21st June
Disney have been very busy this year with all their upcoming live-action movies, so it’s nice to see they still have a little time for some good old fashioned animation in the form of Toy Story 4. This time, the team seem to be at a funfair, encountering new friends, and I suspect some new enemies – though not much else has been revealed yet. I will never get bored of Toy Story, so I’m excited to see Woody and Buzz and all of their friends. Also, Keanu Reeves has a part in this movie – excited!
Starring | Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Joan Cusack, Don Rickles, Donnie Hunt, Keanu Reeves

Spider-Man: Far From Home

Release Date | 5th July
Peter Parker returns in Spider-Man: Far From Home, the next chapter of the Spider-Man: Homecoming series. Our friendly neighbourhood Super Hero decides to join his best friends Ned, MJ, and the rest of the gang on a European vacation. However, Peter’s plan to leave super heroics behind for a few weeks are quickly scrapped when he begrudgingly agrees to help Nick Fury uncover the mystery of several elemental creature attacks, creating havoc across the continent! I’m most excited to see where this movie is going to fit within the MCU – any ideas?

The second live-action Disney film in my list, The Lion King journeys to the African savanna where a future king is born. Simba idolizes his father, King Mufasa, and takes to heart his own royal destiny. But not everyone in the kingdom celebrates the new cub’s arrival. Scar, Mufasa’s brother-and former heir to the throne-has plans of his own. The battle for Pride Rock is ravaged with betrayal, tragedy and drama, ultimately resulting in Simba’s exile. With help from a curious pair of newfound friends, Simba will have to figure out how to grow up and take back what is rightfully his.

The New Mutants

This sci-fi horror film is based on the Marvel comics of the same name. Five teenage mutants; Magik, Wolfsbane, Cannonball, Sunspot and Mirage, are only just learning of their profound supernatural abilities after being held in a clandestine facility under the watchful eye of doctor and mentor Cecilia Reyes. But can they grapple with their past wrongdoings in order to change their predicament, or are they prisoners of their sins? Does anyone else think this looks incredibly dark for a Marvel movie – love it.

Artemis Fowl

Release Date | 9th August
Based on the first two books in author Eoin Colfer wildly popular children’s fantasy series, Walt Disney Studios brings us Artemis Fowl, the story of adolescent criminal genius Artemis, who captures a vicious fairy, and attempts to harness her magical powers in a bid to rescue his family. I’ve never read the books myself, but I’ve seen a lot of love for this franchise, so I’m looking forward to getting on board.
Starring | Judi Dench, Josh Gad, Ferida Shaw, Lara McDonnell

Joker

Release Date | 4th October
In 1981, a failed stand-up comedian disregarded by the society that he lives in turns to a life of crime and chaos in Gotham City. This is going to be the mysterious origin story of the Joker, and I cannot wait. He is one of the best villains of all time, and whilst there have been some questionable portrayals of the character in the past, Joaquin Phoenix looks amazing so far. I really hope he does the Joker justice.
Starring | Joaquin Phoenix, Robert De Niro, Zazi Beetz

Zombieland: Double Tap

Release Date | 11th October
Apart from the fact that this is going to be a sequel to Zombieland, with all the previous cast returning – along with a few new faces – we know next to nothing about Double Tap at the moment, which is incredibly annoying because I NEED to know what they are going to do with this. I absolutely loved the fist movie, and it ended on the perfect note, so I can’t quite see where this is headed, but I’m excited to see either way.
Starring | Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone, Abigail Breslin, Rosario Dawson, Bill Murray

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

Release Date | 20th December
Another year, another Star Wars movie shrouded in mystery – but what else were you expecting. Episode IX is going to be the final film in this new Star Wars trilogy, so expect a lot of surprise and wrapping up. I’ll always be excited for Star Wars films, though I’m not going to lie, The Mandalorian is a little higher on my ‘cannot wait for this’ list.
Starring | Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Mark Hamillm, Billy Dee Williams, Matt Smith
